Adding the LogiGear RSS Feed to Your Web Site

By Rob Pirozzi, LogiGear Corporation

From the point of view of a web publisher, one of the most exciting things about RSS is that it gives individuals an easy way to add relevant content to their web site without having to write that content. A lot has been written about how to create RSS feeds. Much less has been written to help individuals incorporate an RSS feed into their own web site. This article provides a brief overview of one easy means of adding the LogiGear RSS feed to your web site.

It is actually fairly easy to add the LogiGear RSS content to your web site thanks to a tool from RSS-INFO.COM, who provide - RSSinclude. RSSinclude is a simple, web-based tool that creates the necessary code to incorporate an RSS feed into a web site. A few simple steps and anyone should be able to add the LogiGear RSS content to their web site.

The Preferred Way to Incorporate Content

If an individual is going to go to all of the trouble of adding syndicated RSS content to their web site then they want to make sure that their site gets credit for having that content. This means that they want to make sure that the search engines are able to "see" the content, and crawl and index it. For this reason, of the various methods that RSSinclude provides for adding content, individuals want to make sure to use PHP over JavaScript and IFrame (all three of which are methods for including an RSS feed in a web site that are supported by RSSinclude).

Adding the LogiGear RSS Feed to Your Web Site Using RSSinclude and PHP

These simple steps should enable anyone to incorporate the LogiGear RSS feed into their web site in no time:

  • Make sure that the web site's web server/web hoster supports PHP (most do). Either check their documentation, support postings, or send them an e-mail to ask them. An individual could also simply continue on to see if this works. If it does, the web server/hoster supports PHP...).
  • Change the file name extension for the page where the LogiGear content will be incorporated from ".htm" or ".html" to ".php".

HINT - if the target web site makes use of server-side includes (something that looks like this: <!--#include virtual="/filename.txt"-->), than these includes will need to be changed to PHP includes (something that looks like this: <?php include("/filename.txt"); ?>).

  • Get the URL of the LogiGear RSS feed - http://feeds.feedburner.com/LogiGearArticles.
  • Use RSSinclude to generate the necessary PHP code to incorporate the LogiGear RSS feed into a web page.
    • Put the above LogiGear RSS feed URL into the "RSS URL" box.
    • Enter entries for the "Max. entries [max. 10]", "Table/IFrame width: [in px]", Background color", "Border color", "Cell background color" boxes. The defaults work fine.
    • Make sure that the "Open Links in a new Window" check-box is checked (this is the default).
    • Make sure to select "PHP" in the "Integration" section.
    • Hit the "Create HTML" button to create the necessary HTML to incorporate into a web page.
  • Copy the generated html and then paste it into the appropriate section of the target web page (the place where you are putting the LogiGear content). It should look something like the following:

Don't forget to upload the page to the web site...

Can Not or Do Not Want to Use PHP?

JavaScript can be used as an alternative to using PHP. Simply copy the following code into your web site:

Disclaimer

One final note, the above steps will work to incorporate any RSS feed into a web site, not just the LogiGear RSS Feed. A web site publisher should make sure that the content they want to incorporate into their web site is available to be freely incorporated into another web site. The RSS feed publisher's web-site usually posts appropriate and acceptable use guidelines. Individuals want to be careful not to violate any copyright laws.

LogiGear's RSS Feed Usage Guidelines
