Simple Rules for Complex Automation

You know the adage, “Measure twice, cut once”? It’s applicable to testing, too. For automation to be successful, the approach has to be thoughtful and well-planned. Keep these rules in mind for effective testing:

  • Focus on effective testing, not on test execution or automation scripting – no more than five percent of test cases should be executed manually, and no more than five percent of testing resources applied
  • Your automation tool should be (a) robust in identifying bugs and problems; and (b) minimize time, costs and resource utilization
  • Be alert! Bored or complacent testers might important problems so pass monotonous tasks to automation. Let the testers focus on test scenarios that challenge them.
