About Halliburton

Halliburton Company is an American multinational corporation and the world’s second largest oil service company and responsible for most of the world’s largest fracking operations. The company helps customers maximize value throughout the lifecycle of the reservoir – from locating hydrocarbons and managing geological data, to drilling and formation evaluation, well construction and completion, and optimizing production throughout the life of the asset.

The Challenges

  • Centrify’s platform consists of completely integrated software and a cloud-based service that runs on Windows, Unix/Linux systems, mobile and Java and Web-based applications. The extensive number of supported platforms makes the application testing extremely complex and requires several tools for all the required functional, load and security testing for each release.
  • There were many issues to be solved so that the functional testing to keep up with product roll-out plans. One of the issues was the use of different automation platforms by various teams for functional testing. Even though the automaton of the tests was being outsourced, there was still duplicated effort due to the different testing approaches.
  • However, the most critical issue was that automation coverage decreased with each new build due to the amount of maintenance work required to keep the automation scripts up-to-date.

The Solutions

  • To prove the capability of the solution, the LogiGear team automated several existing tests. Centrify engineers were next provided the tests to implement and conduct as a model for producing other test cases using plain text. The initial pilot successfully demonstrated that TestArchitect could provide the collaborative automation solution, and both Centrify’s in-house and outsourced teams could use and share test assets.
  • LogiGear worked with the Centrify test teams to program custom actions for several application controls. At the same time, LogiGear provided training to all of the teams to accomplish the client’s objective of having a standardized testing approach and method.

The Results

  • A complete automation platform was delivered to Centrify in one month only. Test development was completed and transitioned from the initial LogiGear team to Centrify teams within 3 months. An extensive library of keyword actions was developed, allowing even non-technical testers to create new test suites on the releases without programming support.
  • This approach enabled 80% of all of Centrify’s tests to be automated. The average time to prepare a new platform test suite was reduced to 2 days.
  • The previous full test suite required 2 weeks and 4 to 5 test engineers, and could be executed by only 1 tester and eight hours using 4 machines. In the first full test suite run approximately 25,000,000 total tests were run across all builds, finding 972 bugs, of which 60% were identified from automated tests.

In today’s business environment, startups must pursue an aggressive global model for software development and testing. In less than six months, LogiGear designed and delivered a powerful and global automated software testing solution that proved
critical to our successful product launch
